Memorial: Sister Irene Roberts Evans

Sister Irene Roberts-Evans was born to Warren L. and Gertrude Dicks Roberts on March 11, 1917 in West Monroe, Louisiana.

She accepted Christ as her Saviour at the age of 9 years and united with Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church where she was baptized. She was active in Sunday School, and helped organize the Usher Board where she served for several years.

She attended the St. John Elementary School in West Monroe, and the Trenton School also of West Monroe. When she moved to Monroe, she became active in the church there, but returned to her former church once a month, until she moved to St. Louis in 1940.

In 1942 she moved to Oakland, California. In early 1944 she united with the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. William Clark. At Mt. Zion she served for a while on the Usher Board. She was a member of the Sunday School Class #4 of the Adult Department, Sister Lena Byrd, teacher, and a member of the Inspirational Chorus.

In 1952, she was joined in wedlock to Mr. Leon Evans,

Sister Evans was an active member of Mt. Zion until she moved her membership to Foothill Missionary Baptist Church, Revered W.A. Holly, Pastor, in April 1972, where she was a loyal member until she was called from labor to reward on Sunday, July 7, 1980.

Sister Evans was a busy person. She attended Merritt and Laney Colleges studying English, Math, History and Millinery. She worked with the Headstart Program at Golden Gate School in Oakland. She also worked with the Brownie and Girl Scout Troops. For a while she was a member of the Senior Choir at Foothill and an active member of the First Aid Department at the time of her death.

Her other activities (past and present) are as follows: Member, Federation of Colored Women; Member, Queen Adah Grand Chapter - Order of Eastern Star; Assistant Matron and Matron - Marie Chapter #42 OES: Past Matron - Matrons and Patrons Council; Member, Queen of the South; past Associate Matron - Daughters of Sphinx; Member, Amarants; Heroines of Jericho and Lady Knights.

She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted husband, Mr. Leon Evans; her mother, Mrs. Gertrude Roberts of West Monroe, Louisiana; a son, Mr. Douglas Dice of Oakland; a daughter, Mrs. Delores Thornton of Sacramento, California; two granddaughters, Ms. Linda Dice and Melodi "KiKi" Dice of Oakland; one brother and one half brother, Mr. Leon Roberts of West Monroe and Mr. Phillip Jackson of Monroe, Louisiana; six nieces, three nephews and other relatives and friends.
